Initial reactions to tensile forces of up to 3.5 N per side applied to the maxilla of a macerated Macaca mulatta skull were determined with holographic interferometry. Displacements ranged from 0 µm to 22 µm depending on the force magnitude and the point of observation. A complicated force-coordinated pattern of shearing and compression in the sutures occurred. The results appear comparable to similar experiments in dry human skulls and analogous to the effects observed in long-term experiments in living animals.
