The setting of zinc polycarboxylate dental cements is studied by the measurement of conductance as a function of time. The kinetics can be described by two parameters: an induction period, to, and a first-order reaction rate constant, k, for the decrease of conductance. The influence of molecular weight, temperature, cement-to-liquid ratio, and pre-heat treatment of zinc oxide on both parameters is studied.
