Formation of 12L-Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic Acid (12-HETE) by Gingival Tissue

Extracts of inflamed human gingival tissue converted exogenous [14C] -arachidonic acid mainly to a non-prostaglandin metabolite. This metabolite was identified as 12-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (12-HETE) by gas-liquid chromatography-mass-spectometry. Endogenous arachidonic acid was also converted to 12-HETE. Significant formation of PGF2{alpha} , PGD2, PGI2, Thromboxane B, or 12-HHT could not be detected, but, in occasional experiments, significant conversion of arachidonic acid to PGE2 was found.
