Crevicular fluid was collected from patients with periodontitis and tested for the presence of a functional complement system. The effect of dental plaque on the first complement component (C1) was studied. Results indicated functional C1 and functional whole complement activities in gingival crevicular fluid are rapidly inactivated by dental plaque and possibly other host factors.
