Simplified Procedure for Measuring the Effect of Gustatory Perception on Parotid Gland Flow Rate

Ira L. Shannon

Oral Physiology Research Laboratory, Veterans Administration Hospital and University of Texas Dental Branch, Houston, Texas 77031

Ralph P. Feller

Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic, Boston, Massachusetts

Parotid flow rate resulting from sipping 1.0% citric acid solution was regressed on the rate of stimulus application. A linear relationship was found between flow rate and the logarithm of the application rate. This simpler stimulation procedure may be substituted for the more variable swab method.
