Critical Reviews

From its inception, Critical Reviews in Oral Biology & Medicine provided a unique perspective on the review of hot topics in oral biology and medicine. The reviews spanned a diverse spectrum of topics, reflecting the vigor and significance of oral and dental research during this period. Importantly, the reviews adopted erudite, analytical, and critical approaches to consideration of the topics being reviewed, and have long been recognized to provide an authoritative viewpoint. A researcher, whether experienced or just embarking on a career in dental research, has been able to derive a sound foundation on a topic after reading a Critical Review, confident in the knowledge that it represents the state of the science. While the authors, editorial board members, and reviewers have all contributed to this position, one person has been responsible for the overall success and direction of Critical Reviews. Olav Alvares has been the editor of Critical Reviews from the start, when the journal was first published by CRC Press as the official publication of the American Association of Oral Biologists, and the journal has gradually grown and evolved over the last 16 years to its position today. His careful solicitation of manuscripts from authors who are authorities on their subjects, as well as being able to adopt a constructively critical approach to their writing, together with his own quiet, but firm, guidance to authors has contributed to the definitive stance achieved with these reviews. Olav’s own scientific standing, modesty, and gentlemanly nature have been very valuable qualities in getting the best out of authors and ensuring that they approach the task in hand robustly and with vision. For those of us fortunate to have worked with Olav, it has been a privilege and pleasure. After 16 years, Olav has now decided to pass on responsibility for Critical Reviews to another, confident in the knowledge that it is in excellent health. When the IADR and AADR Boards decided to feature Critical Reviews content in the JDR in 2005, it was a step that took the two top dental journals and resulted in one even stronger and more rounded journal, and I am personally indebted to Olav for his great support in making this a smooth transition. It will not be easy for anyone to step into Olav’s shoes to lead this section of the Journal, but I am sure that it will continue to evolve and provide the key source of authoritative reviews in dental research. We will always be grateful to Olav Alvares for his unique and critical contribution to the dental literature and for the rich legacy he has bestowed upon us.
