9 Bennington Road, Morristown, NJ 07960-6125 TO THE EDITOR: In his recent Guest Editorial ("A National Oral Health Plan: Implications and Opportunities for Research and Academia", J Dent Res 82:2040-2041-2001), Irwin Mandel, in his usual masterful manner, presented a comprehensive overview of NIDCR's programs which have been developed with the goal of significantly enhancing the oral health of all our citizens. It is quite clear that the proposed programs encompass a broad range of objectives and would potentially generate considerable research and training initiatives for academia. It was somewhat disconcerting, however, to note that there was no mention of an additional partner which has the potential of making significant contributions to this effort, namely, industry. There are several components of the program with which industry has considerable experience and for which productive relationships could be established—for example, the development and circulation of patient education materials, both by individual companies and in conjunction with professional organizations; the quest for novel agents for the control of biofilms; and vaccine development. In addition, there are precedents for the establishment of Cooperative Research and Development Agreements between industry and the NIDCR. I would urge those who are developing programs to achieve the aims of the National Health Plan to consider involving industry as well, since such collaborations could provide "win-win" situations for both parties, and ultimately result in the improvement of our citizens' oral health...a universal goal! –Michael L.
