Figure. Scanned images of the occlusal surfaces of deciduous second molars and permanent first molars in a pair of opposite-sex DZ twins. Cusp tips are marked and labeled, with intercuspal distances indicated. A scale was used to bring linear measurements to actual size, and occlusal surfaces were oriented parallel to the focal plane. In the maxilla: MB-DB = mesiobuccal to distobuccal; DB-DL = distobuccal to distolingual; DL-ML = distolingual to mesiolingual; ML-MB = mesiolingual to mesiobuccal. In the mandible: MB-DB = mesiobuccal to distobuccal; DB-D = distobuccal to distal; D-DL = distal to distolingual; DL-ML = distolingual to mesiolingual; ML-MB = mesiolingual to mesiobuccal. Maximum mesiodistal (MD) and buccolingual (BL) crown diameters were also recorded but are not indicated on the images. In this case, MD diameters of permanent mandibular first molars were not recorded in the female co-twin, since their distal surfaces were partially covered by soft tissue.
