Department of Stomatology, Division of Oral Biology, University of California, San Francisco, California 94143 Recent work implicating microbial factors in the pathogenesis of several oral soft tissue diseases is discussed. These conditions include recurrent aphthous ulceration, oral cancer, Sjogren's syndrome, and the oral lesions of AIDS (the acquired immune deficiency syndrome). This paper reviews some recent work on these topics, with emphasis on investigations in our laboratory.
