Ultrastructural Characteristics of Progenitor Cell Populations in the Periodontal LigamentDivision of Periodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, University of British Columbia, 2199 Wesbrook Mall, Vancouver, BC, Canada V6T IZ7 Electron microscope radio-autography was used in an attempt to identify any relationship between the location and degree of differentiation of progenitor cells in the periodontal ligament (PDL). Ligament fibroblasts were classified on the basis of their nuclear/ cytoplasmic ratio and their distance to the closest blood vessel measured. It was determined that an undifferentiated paravascular progenitor cell population exists, and that the PDL also contains progenitor cells showing a range of cytodifferentiation.
