Department of Chemistry of the University of Amsterdam, J.H. van 't Hoff Instituut, Nieuwe Achtergracht 166, Amsterdam, The Netherlands The setting of zinc polycarboxylate dental cements is studied by the measurement of conductance as a function of time. The kinetics can be described by two parameters: an induction period, to, and a first-order reaction rate constant, k, for the decrease of conductance. The influence of molecular weight, temperature, cement-to-liquid ratio, and pre-heat treatment of zinc oxide on both parameters is studied.
