Effect of Increasing Contact Time of Sucrose Solution or Powdered Sucrose on Plaque pH in vivo

Interdental plaque pH, recorded in six volunteers during and after rinsing for one, two, four, eight, and two x four min with 15 ml of a 7.3 mM (0.25%) sucrose solution, declined continuously the longer the substrate was in contact with the plaque. The addition of a sticky, non-fermentable substrate to powdered sucrose significantly increased the acidogenic response of interdental plaque.
