Box 20068, Houston, Texas 77025 Previous studies of xerostomic patients showed salivary IgA values and agglutination titers against Streptococcus mutans to be inversely related to plaque levels of the microorganism and post-irradiation caries activity. Chromatographic separation of the samples allowed examination of this agglutination activity for immunoglobulin correlation and antigenic specificity. Serum activity was related to all the major immunoglobulins, with prominence from polymeric IgA. Salivary activity was restricted to the 11S IgA-IgM region. An unidentified, very high molecular weight salivary component agglutinated Lactobacillus fermenti in addition to S. mutans.
