Department of Removable Prosthodontics, Northwestern University, and Division of Clinical Studies, Research Institute, American Dental Association Health Foundation, Chicago, Illinois 60611, USA A technique was developed by which plaque accumulations on intraoral artificial surfaces could be viewed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Micrographs of two plaque specimens from a given individual appeared similar; however, plaque specimens from different individuals encompassed a wide range of variation in terms of content and thickness.
