College of Dentistry, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio 43210, USA Mast cells and basophils decreased in numbers in older germfree rats. Degranulation of mast cells increased in older animals. It is possible that aging is related to increasing degranulation and the release of pharmacologically active substances such as heparin. The release of heparin might play a role in bone loss.
