Departments of Anatomy and Orthodontics, and Maxillofacial Growth Division, Dental Research Laboratory (Oakdale), University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa 52240, USA Rates of chondrocytic proliferation within the rat septum were evaluated radioautographically. Results showed that the zone of greatest activity was within the sphenoidal tail. The zone of second highest activity was just anterior to the septoethmoidal junction; and the third highest was in the center of the septum. Proliferative activity in all other regions was relatively low.
